Advanced Bronchoscopic Services

As the only integrated pulmonary and critical care medicine, sleep medicine, and thoracic surgery department in the nation, the highly experienced, multidisciplinary team at the Temple Lung Center is consistently setting new standards of care in bronchoscopic research, technology, treatment, and recovery. Temple offers an enhanced patient experience with a single centralized location for both treatment and recovery.

The strategic positioning of the bronchoscopic suite in the operating room enables our physician team to provide optimal care, particularly for transplant patients, and further positions Temple as the leading center in bronchoscopic therapies for patients with lung disease.

INTEGRATION AND INNOVATION DRIVE SUCCESS

The integration of pulmonary and surgical expertise into one comprehensive team creates a unified approach to diagnosis and treatment.

Unlike other institutions, Temple’s bronchoscopy team is a fully integrated multidisciplinary group with the ability to perform multiple complex procedures with nationally recognized results:

  • A pioneer in the field–Temple led the only two studies that achieved FDA approval for bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR).
  • In 2018, Temple became the first center in the nation to perform BLVR using implantation of the Zephyr Endobronchial Valve.
  • Driving global advancement, Temple is one of the top enrollers of patients in interventional bronchoscopic clinical trials.
  • Temple is the nation’s leading lung transplantation center, with the highest-volume lung transplant program in the country since 2015.
  • Our physicians are also frequently tapped for second opinions and to perform procedures on patients deemed too high risk for other institutions.

LEADING THE WAY IN COMPLEX PROCEDURES

The Temple Lung Center leads the nation in numerous complex patient procedures, including:

  • Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR)
  • Use of targeted cone beam CT, augmented fluoroscopy, and radial EBUS with robotic bronchoscopy for patients with suspicious nodules and underlying advanced lung disease, resulting in greater precision biopsies and fewer missed cancer diagnoses
  • Airway management for stenosis, including dilating and stenting
  • Endoscopic treatment for central airway obstruction due to malignant or benign etiologies
  • Diagnosis and treatment of tracheobroncheomalacia (TBM)

ADVANCE BRONCHOSCOPIC PROCEDURES

The Temple Lung Center performs over 2,000 bronchoscopies a year. In addition to general bronchoscopic procedures such as airway inspections, biopsies, and laryngoscopies, Temple Lung Center offers an array of advanced treatment options tailored to patient needs, including:

  • Bronchial dilatation stent placement and removal
  • Cryotherapy
  • Argon plasma coagulation (APC) therapy
  • Foreign body removal
  • Bronchial valve placement and removal
  • Radial endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
  • Linear endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
  • Navigational bronchoscopy
  • Robotic bronchoscopy
