Program Goals

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is the 3rd leading cause of inpatient cardiovascular mortality after myocardial infarction (MI) and Stroke. Management of PE has undergone a paradigm shift given advancement in treatment options like catheter directed treatment options, ECMO and surgical embolectomy. Ideal patient selection and risk stratification still remains a challenge. Multi-disciplinary Pulmonary embolism response teams (PERT) can handle such scenarios in real time and in an evidence-based manner. This presentation will cover several key aspects of developing a PERT team, and how it can target patient centered care.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for the following medical professionals who have a clinical interest in Interstitial Lung Diseases: Pulmonologists; Critical Care Specialists; Internal Medicine and Primary Care Physicians; Physician Assistants; Advanced Practice Nurses; and Nurse Practitioners.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Interpret Pulmonary embolism epidemiology.
2. Describe evolution and structure of pulmonary embolism response team (PERT).
3. Implement the role of PERT teams on acute PE management.
4. Apply PERT’s role in transition of care and longitudinal out patient care.
